One film left a lasting impression at Hof, if only because of its unusual thematic content. Dedicated to his old daughter, Douglas Wolfsperger´s
Der Entsorgte Vater (The Deposed Father) was more than four years
in the making. In a moment of truth, Wolfsperger chronicles his separation from his daughter. As decreed by the courts, he has stripped of any and all contact with his child. While on his way to bid his daughter a final farewell, Wolfsperger took the time to meet and interview other fathers who suffer a similar fate thus the idea to make a film on the general theme of deposed fathers took shape. Wounded individuals all, they seem to be fighting windmills, either with ex-wives or court officials. Some seem even unable to come to grips with their own crippling hang-ups. One woman, a mother. Is also included in the survey. While telling their dejected tales angry, disappointed, sadden, even naïve their emotions are bared to the bone. As a family theme treated with forthright honesty, The Deposed Father is a painful statement on loss and longing.
